And a nice, flavorful honey rakia to close out my stay in Makarska…
Konoba Kalalarga Day One
Easily my favorite restaurant in Croatia, as well as on the entire planet. Fresh food, minimal ingredients, traditional recipes, prepared from scratch.
There’s no menu at Kalalarga. You get whatever the fishermen hauled out of the Adriatic Sea that morning. The owner selects his seafood and chooses to make five or six dishes depending on what was in that day’s catch and what he feels...
Croatian Rakia Report 2012
Rakia is the national drink of Croatia and comes in countless flavors. Most rakia tends to be homemade, with the taste and strength of each batch differing from restaurant to restaurant and bar to bar. So much like I tried to catalog my caipirinha consumption in Brazil, I thought I would do the same with my rakia reveling here in Croatia… for scholarly and sociological purposes, of course!

Roast To Go, Borough Market, London
In one of the food or travel magazines I subscribe to, I recently read an article where Chef April Bloomfield of The Spotted Pig and John Dory Oyster Bar in NYC made mention of the fact that her favorite sandwich in the world was the roast pork at Roast To Go in London. So when I found myself with a free afternoon there last week, guess where I headed…
It was superb! (Or should...
Croatian Burek
Now this is my kind of breakfast!
Burek is a Croatian “meat pie”, with spiced ground meat rolled into phyllo dough, ringed like sausage, then baked.
A tasty way to start my day…
Croatian Burek is also C.B. for short! :)
The Blacksmith & The Toffeemaker
As I posted earlier, yesterday I walked by a cool little pub named “The Blacksmith & the Toffeemaker” and fell in love with it over the name alone. Well, today I went back to discover my love justified as the food, atmosphere, staff of the B&T are all quite amazing!
Here’s a look…
That’s Liam, the bartender, who couldn’t be cooler. Had a blast...
New From Pizza Hut Japan
The Yokubari 4, which would loosely translate as the “I Want It All 4”…
Another Pizza Hut masterpiece divided into quarters, each with a different set of “gourmet” toppings. In this case they are…
A. Korean Bulgogi Beef
B. “Melty” Camembert Cheese
C. Potato & Mayonnaise
D. Cheese & Cheese, with what looks like tomatoes there
The...
Feed Your Hole
One of my new favorite burgers in New York City is brought to us by the fine folks at Feed Your Hole…
The Diesel Burger, with lettuce, bacon, cheese and ranch…
Follow Sean and his terrific truck at @feedyourhole on Twitter and get over and grab a burger when he’s parked near you!
Black Tea Pork
My wife’s cousin from Japan is staying with us this week and it turns out she’s quite an incredible cook! Aren’t those always the best kind on house guest?! :)
Yesterday I came home to find this amazingly succulent and flavorful black tea braised pork shoulder waiting for me…
I will hopefully have the recipe to share soon!
Bodega La Tinaja, Barcelona
OK, folks, time to start catching you up on my Barcelona eating adventures! I apologize for the delay in posting pics while I was over there, but the internet connections and free wi-fi zones in Spain left a lot to be desired. So without further ado…
After getting the keys to our apartment and snacking on a few pintxos, our first sit down soiree of the trip was at Bodega La Tinaja in the El...
El Quim De La Boqueria, Barcelona
We finally made it on our last day! And it was indeed as good as everyone says…
Their wonderful homemade meatballs…
Butifarra sausage with garlic aioli, white beans and a grilled tomato…
And the El Quim Special, fried baby squid over two fried eggs…
