A Year in Kit Kats
A visual look at the Japanese Kit Kats that were consumed with great glee, and sometimes fear, at Marvel Comics this year… Red Wine… Chili pepper (togarashi)… Wasabi… Raspberry and passion fruit… Maple syrup… Blueberry… Mixed fruit juice, with bananas, strawberries and peaches… Mixed juice individual wrapper… Cherry...

Funky Flavors of Asia: Singapore
Love the name and the guitar-playing mascot. Where’d the name come from? Chachi meets nachos? What about when Joannie meets potato chips? Joanngles? A snack without an identity? Japanese? Indonesian? This was actually a very tasty and refreshing drink. Except for the “chunky bits”. Unneccesary!

An Argument For Living With Your Parents
We have dinner plans almost every night when we visit Japan, especially on a short trip like this one where we have just a few days to try and see all our friends and family here. However, even if she knows we’re going out, and even if she’s coming with us, my mother-in-law will always make food for us to eat BEFORE we leave for the restaurant! That was the case again tonight, when...

Funky Flavors of Asia: Japan Part Three
Green Tea Chocolate Chips… The less said about these wretched snacks, the better, if you ask me. Green tea and chocolate flavors have been combined successfully in the past in other products, like Melty Kiss… …but when mixed with the taste and texture of these somewhat savory chips, which were not potato but some bizarre laboratory-created concoction of French bread and...

Cooking for Men
That’s what the title says. Then a big warning in red: “Not for chicks!” And in orange: “No women allowed to read this magazine or use any of the recipes contained within. Ever.” (I’m kidding, obviously.) But the magazine really is “Cooking for Men”.

Move Over Kit Kat...
…Cup Noodle Japan is looking to give you a run for your money in the “just how many different flavors can we come up with” race! Sure a couple of “classics” had us thinking twice when you introduced them a few years back, like Cheese Curry… …and Cream Stew. And I can see kinda see what you were thinking with Sio (Salt)… But did you really...

Funky Flavors of Asia: Japan Part Two
I actually picked up these chips with the intention of eating them, not blogging about them. “Karai”, as it reads there on the bag, means “spicy” in Japanese, and as a fan of spicy foods, I grabbed these to take back and have with a few beers. But when I got home and took a closer look, in addition to just plain hot peppers, there were a number of other different spices...

Whiskey in a Jar...
…or, in this case, in a can, to be exact. Yet another new pre-mixed cocktail you can just walk into any convenience store and buy here in Japan.

The New Japanese Texas Burger
One of my many other Japanese obsessions is with McDonald’s and its menu here. I absolutely love the fact that they never keep things the same and are constantly changing up their food selections, experimenting and introducing a new “seasonal” burger every month or so. They’ve been doing this since I first came here almost 20 years ago, so don’t get up in arms about...

What Doesn't Kill You...
As people have suddenly started asking me about fugu and its rumored reprecussions again after that last post, I found a few older missives about the potentially fatal fish I put up over on my old Chesterfest blog in December 2008… Ever since The Simpsons brought fugu, the oh so deadly blowfish, to the attention of mainstream America, people have been asking me if I’ve ever eaten it....

Funky Flavors of Asia: Japan Edition 2010
This month’s quick trip to Japan means I’ll have a few days to hit the convenience stores and supermarkets here on my continuing quest to find the funkiest flavors of chips and candies that the Asian countries have to offer. Started with a late night run after our plane landed last night and the first thing that jumped out at me of the shelves was this bag… Gorgonzola Potato...
