No sooner do I post about my San Francisco Mission Chinese experience and wish that Danny Bowien will be opening back up in NYC soon, than I get invited to the Mission Chinese Pop-Up out in Brooklyn at Frankies Sputino 457!
Running through the end of August, the Mission Chinese Pop-Up is a prix fixe $40 meal featuring many of Mission Chinese NYC’s classic dishes along with a few newcomers. There are also a couple of sensational supplemental specials to enjoy…
Let’s step inside the garden and have a look…
We started with a new dish of red cabbage salad with miso and anchovy dressing before moving into a plate of Mission’s reknowned spicy and numbing wings, which were as good as ever…
Spicy noodles with peanuts…
Mapo tofu, which used firm tofu now, giving it a nice chewy texture…
Special #1, the crispy pork belly, which was my favorite dish of the night…
Served with a big ass piece of pork skin…
Along with fresh tortillas, pork liver sauce and house made hot mustard…
Their classic thrice cooked bacon with rice cakes…
Special #2, the koji fried chicken with lemon kosho…
Sorry about the crappy pic, but the dish was OUTSTANDING!
Then on to Special #3, the crispy, whole fried striped bass…
Served over taro and wheat noodles…
Firm yet flaky and fabulous!
There were also plates of Danny’s acclaimed Salt Cod Fried Rice with Chinese sausage and Kung Pao Pastrami, but we dove into those before shots could be snapped!
Thanks to Kate Krader for hooking up the table (and for providing lighting tips!) and for Chef Angela Dimayuga for this amazing meal!
Mission Chinese Franks will only be open limited days through the end of August, so check their website and get out there soon.

Having heard rumor of new pizzas on the menu out at Paulie Gee’s in Brooklyn, me and some of the Marvel guys headed to Greenpoint tonight to try them for ourselves…
Paulie’s pies were glorious as always…
We started with the new “Hellified Porkpie White”, topped with fresh mozzarella, Berkshire sopressata piccante, sweet Italian fennel sausage, sliced red onion, sliced fresh garlic, fresh basil and Mike’s Hot Honey (www.mikeshothoney.com)…
Next up was “Feel Like Bacon Love”, a pizza which has no actual bacon on it! Instead, it’s a combination of Italian tomato and butter sauce flavored with onion and smokey bacon, fresh mozzarella, Pecorino Romano and post-oven milled black pepper…
But tastes just like bacon!
The last of Paulie’s new pizzas that we dug into was “Ricotta Be Kiddin’ Me”, featuring fresh mozzarella, Canadian bacon, sweet Italian fennel sausage, fresh basil and post-oven fresh ricotta dollops…
Of the trio we tried, the “Hellified Porkpie White” was best in show for me.
And we just can’t go to Paulie Gee’s and not get a “Hellboy”…
This is his classic pizza, now made with fresh mozzarella instead of Fior di Latte, Italian tomatoes, Berkshire sopressata picante, Parmigiano Reggiano and Mike’s Hot Honey!
Paulie Gee can do no wrong. Or should I say… “dough no wrong”?

Some friends from Disney Korea visiting the city for the first time wanted real New York pizza, so I took them out to Brooklyn to Juliana’s for one of Patsy Grimaldi’s famous pies!
We went with their classic Margherita with pepperoni and fresh garlic.
And as an added bonus, Patsy himself was working last night!!

Finally made it out to Tørst for beers yesterday!
Here it is, folks, the first new flavor of Ramen Burger that Keizo Shimamoto will be unveiling at Smorgasburg this Saturday… Miso Pimento!
Adding an interesting twist to its debut, the Southern-inspired burger will then be available at Dassara Ramen in Brooklyn for the rest of the week! With with a catch… they’ll be limited to fifty per day, one per person.
And for those still looking to try the original, no worries, they will still be available at Smorgasburg as well.

New York Comic Con and Brooklyn Brewery are teaming up again this year for a new incarnation of the beer concept they launched last year, Brooklyn Defender!
This year’s beer, an American Black Ale with “dark malt visage and hopping finish that protects the city from the scourge of tasteless beers” was brewed with the intention “strike fear into the heart of those who would forget the virtues of true beer.”, according to Brooklyn Brewery brew master Garrett Oliver.
The label, designed to reflect the darker aspect of the new ale, was conceived and drawn by the amazing artist Cliff Chiang!
This redesigned Defender will hit the streets of New York on September 21st at a special launch party at the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg. Click here for details. Hope to see you there!
Wow! I expected Saturday’s ramen burger line to be long, but didn’t expect it to snake through almost ALL of Smorgasburg!!

Artist Alex Maleev just texted over that much to his surprise and joy, Littleneck out in Gowanus now has Shigoku oysters on their menu!!

As a “Manhattan snob”, I rarely travel to Brooklyn. It’s become something of a joke with my friends over the years even. I’ll get on a plane and fly halfway around the world to try a restaurant, but won’t cross a bridge to do the same. However, there are a few chefs and restaurants I will happily travel to the outer boroughs for.
Chuko is one such place.
With a very limited menu, Chefs Jamison, James and Dave focus their skills on what they do best, ramen and a handful of Asian-inspired smalls plates. And as Wolverine is known to quip, they’re some of the best there are at what they do!
Here’s a look…
A delicious kale salad for people who don’t really eat kale, like me…
Some of the best chicken wings in NYC. Period.
Pork belly buns done right…
Their outstanding kimchi ramen with ground pork!
And while an afterthought at many restaurants, the garlic chili oil Chuko offers as a condiment is exceptional!
The lighting was low so the previous pics are quite dark, I know, but I hope they’ll at least give you an idea of what to expect at this amazing little eatery. You definitely need to go and check out Chuko for yourself!

Happened to be out in Brooklyn recently, so hit up BKLYN Larder near Bergen St. Comics for some of their amazing fuet sausage. Turns out they no longer carry it (Nnnnoooooooo!!) but recommended an amazing wild boar cacciatorini instead!
