Remember the McDLT? They kept the hot side hot and the cool side cool? Well, McDonald’s Japan recently started their own Hot & Cool summer campaign, lunching two new menu items last week.
On Hot side, you have the Habanero Tomato Quarter Pounder… a Quarter Pounder topped with cheese, tomato, lettuce and a double dose of a fiery habanero pepper sauce, smeared on the top and bottom of the bun! There is also a chicken option available.
On the Cold Side, you have the BLT Mozzarella & Basil… slices of thick cut bacon, lettuce, tomato, basil pesto and fresh mozzarella, all on a long whole grain bun. Modeled after a Caprese salad, they say.
On sale now nationwide.

A Look at McDonald’s Japan’s World Cup Menu

With the semi-finals starting today, I figured it was the perfect time to give you a first-hand look at the items on McDonald’s Japan’s special World Cup menu, which I sampled my way though in Tokyo last week…

The Brazil BBQ Beef Burger, basically a Big Mac topped with red and yellow peppers and a special Latin BBQ “grill sauce”. Nothing special, not much flavor. But I did love the soccer ball shaped bun!

The two new McNugget sauces they offered, German Curry Sauce and Italian Basil & Cheese…

Both terrible…

Then there were these…

Deep-fried Risotto Balls, one an herb & tomato rice ball, the other a squid ink rice ball…

Both filled with cheese. The squid ink at least had some nice flavor to it, although I have my doubts it was real squid ink…

Ah, the Japan Burger, supposedly a deep fried “minced beef” burger…

Soccer ball bun, good start…

And there was a “burger” under all that shredded cabbage…

But I swear, this was THE WORST thing I have ever tried at any McDonald’s anywhere in the world! Just disgusting.

No flavor or texture. The closest I have ever come to understanding what “eating cardboard” is like. Aptly named though as its terrible taste perfectly reflected the Japanese team’s piss poor performance in the Cup!

However, on the hand, there was the French Chicken Cordon Bleu Burger, not even given the respect of its own personalized box…

Rather plain looking, to be honest…

But this deep-fried chicken patty with melted cheese and sliced ham on a super soft bun was probably THE BEST specialty burger I have ever eaten at a Japanese McDonald’s! The flavors all worked. For a fast food burger, this blew me away. Really.

I did not get the chance to try the German Pork Schnitzel Burger though. Featuring a deep-fried pork cutlet with potato salad, roast onions and a mushroom sauce on a pretzel bun, this baby proved so popular, it sold out on a national level in just a few days!

So much like the World Cup itself, this McDonald’s menu proved to be a mixed bag, full of surprises and disappointments with more than a few bad calls.

McDonald’s Japan World Cup Menu

Here’s a look at McDonald’s Japan’s new internationally-inspired World Cup menu…

image

The first two new sandwiches, both on sale now nationwide in Japan, were created with Brazilian and German flavors in mind…

image

The Brazil “BBQ Beef” Burger is two 100% beef patties topped with red and yellow peppers, shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese and a special Latin BBQ “grill sauce”, all on a soccer shaped bun!

image

The German “Pork Schnitzel” Burger is a deep-fried pork cutlet with potato salad underneath, roast onions on top, all covered in a mushroom sauce on a pretzel bun…

image

The Spanish Omelet McMuffin, which is on their morning menu only, features a spinach and red pepper omelet topped with cheese and a tomato, pepper and almond romesco sauce on an English muffin…

image

What I find very cool are the 12 different soccer-themed collectible french fry packages, each designed by a different international artist

There will also be two kinds of cheese-filled, deep-fried Risotto Balls offered as sides, one an herb and tomato rice ball, the other a squid ink rice ball…

image

Their Chicken McNuggets will come with two new dipping sauce options, an Italian Basil Cheese sauce and German curry sauce…

image

The drink menu will also feature two new McFloat/McFizz flavors, Japanese Blue Ramune and Dutch Passion Orange, both based on the colors of those countries’ uniforms…

image

Then on June 18th, the Brazil and German burgers will be replaced by the Japan “Beef Menchi” Burger and the French “Chicken Cordon Bleu” Burger.

Woke up early for some pre-con sightseeing and the only place we could find open for breakfast was McDonald’s. They weren’t making their new Brazilian burger yet, so I went with something else I’d never seen on a McDonald’s morning menu back home… a Fried Chicken McMuffin. (Do we have these in the States?) Popped on a little local chili sauce, which was thicker and hotter than I expected, and it was probably the best McDonald’s AM item I can remembering tasting. Nicely done, McDonald’s Arabia!

McDonald’s Japan’s Cherry Blossom Burger

It’s cherry blossom season in Japan and everything here in Tokyo is pink… including the burgers!

Culinary adventurer that I am, how could I not go to McDonald’s on this trip and try their new Sakura Teritama, aka the Cherry Blossom Burger?

A teriyaki glazed pork patty topped with a fried egg and cherry blossom flavored mayo, all on a pink bun…

Hard to tell, I know, but yes, the bun is slightly pink…

Here’s a look under the hood…

The cherry blossom mayo does give the burger a slightly sweet, floral taste…

The verdict?

Once is enough.

I had a few bites and that was it.

Not something I’ll be bringing to any “hanami” cherry blossom viewing parties.

Oh, they are also offering a Sakura Cherry Float, which might make a nice mixer for hanami cocktails…

Cherry blossom season is upon us… which means there will not only be a lot more drunks in the parks and on the trains across Japan, but more seasonal selections at Japanese fast food joints!
McDonald’s launches their latest offering, the Sakura Teritama burger, this Friday, March 21st.
The Sakura Teritama is a teriyaki-glazed beef patty topped with a fried egg and special “cherry blossom mayo sauce”, all on a special pink bun.
It will be available daily from 10:30am to 4:59am the next morning, encouraging people to pick theirs up before “hanami”, or traditional cherry blossom viewing parties, or drop by McDonald’s afterwards for a late night/early morning fix.
Oddly enough, the campaign does not mention price yet.
